Located
in downtown Wichita on the banks of the Arkansas River, the
Wichita Botanical Gardens are an oasis of nature in the midst of one of Kansas'
largest cities. It is a beautiful and peaceful place. There are
fountains, gazebos, ponds and thousands upon thousands of flowers. The
garden is divided into several areas, such as the Shakespearean Garden, the Rose
Garden, the Aquatic Collection, and more. Recently a butterfly house was
opened which operates seasonally.

You will run out of film before you run out of flowers here. Tripods are allowed, and many of the flowers are more or less sheltered from the wind, so this is an excellent place to photograph them. Thousands of volunteer hours are spent keeping this place in great shape.

This Monarch Butterfly is one of the residents of the newly added butterfly house. Visitors may walk among these beautiful and graceful insects as well as viewing them as they hatch from their cocoons.
