It's hard to imagine President
Lincoln without a beard, but he was well into his campaign for
the Presidency before he
grew one. An eleven year-old girl in New York State wrote Lincoln
suggesting he grow the now famous beard--and he did. After being elected,
and on the way to his inauguration, Lincoln paid a visit to Grace Bedell,
thanking her for the advice. The young girl became a young lady and
married, moving at the age of 19 with her husband to a farm 3 1/2 miles north of
Delphos. A stone monument has been erected in the city's park to
memorialize her small, but important contribution to history.
