fick2s.jpg (35821 bytes)Built through local donations and completed in 1972, the Fick Fossil museum houses the fossil collection of Earnest and Viola Fick .  Along with their collection of thousands of fossils collected within 20 miles of the Fick's Logan County home, the museum also houses the Logan County Historical Museum, one of the best county museums I've ever seen.

fick3s.jpg (32740 bytes)One of the more unique displays in the museum are these sculptures created by Viola Fick .  At first glance they appear to be paintings, but upon further examination you will see that they are actually sculptures created with a few of the many fossils that the Ficks collected over the years.  The resulting artwork is a sort of textured painting which is quite impressive.

fick5s.jpg (26548 bytes)When I went to the museum, I was expecting only fossils.  The Logan County Historical Museum came as a pleasant surprise.   The displays of local and regional history in this museum would be the envy of much larger communities.  It is quite well done and I was impressed.  The display in the photo at left is one of several, including a sod house furnished as it would have looked in the days of the early pioneers.
