Though far less well known than the nearby Monument Rocks, this rock formation is impressive in it's own right.

This part of Kansas is sometimes known as "drive through country". It's true, if the few scattered farmsteads out this way expect to have any kittens, they'd better have their own tomcat. But all this solitude is its own virtue. Beauty grows here, too. The small flowers (photo, right and below, left) growing at the base of the rocks could be easily overlooked by a travelers obsessed only with going from point 'A' to point 'B' .

Highway
83 travels through some pretty flat country out here. I had
a motel room for the night in Garden City, about 60 miles south, so after
catching what photographers call "the golden hour" at the Little Pyramids, I
headed south. Looking out over the plains in the darkness all that could
be seen for miles in all directions were the strobe lights on the center pivot
irrigation rigs, like thousands of fireflies swarming over the thirsty
cornfields. Early explorer Zebulon Pike called this area "The Great American
Desert". This desert grows corn, wheat, and cattle, and helps feed the
world.
