Until
1990, the exact location of the Southwest corner of Kansas
wandered around periodically. The windmill monument was placed where the
three corners were located in 1903. By 1908, the corners had moved 3/4
mile north of this location until that survey was thrown out by President
Roosevelt.
Using the satellite technology, in 1990 the Bureau of Land Management fixed the location at the brass marker in the middle of the road about 50 feet southwest of the old windmill monument. The actual marker is buried 4 feet below the brass marker which is about the size of a man-hole cover. You cannot visit the corners without standing on the brass marker. It simply can't be done. The temptation to stand in three states at once is too great. It's like a magnet.
