The
region of Kansas known as the Red or Gypsum Hills is quite unique
and beautiful. It lies in a small area just west of Medicine Lodge on both
sides of Highway 160. The photos here were taken along the marked scenic
tour route and on the county road to Lake City just north of Highway 160.
To take the scenic tour, turn south off the highway just west of Medicine Lodge
and then follow the signs. A tour guide pamphlet is available from the
Medicine Lodge Chamber of Commerce listed at the contact above.
Where
there is beauty, there is also sometimes danger. Look
closely at the sunflower at right. You will notice a small spider which
has changed it's color to blend in with the petals. It waits motionless
for a careless insect to land within it's reach on the flower.
