The
markers at each corner of the state are different, and reflect
the diversity of the State of Kansas itself. Here at the Southeast corner,
at the point where Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri meet, a monument made of
native stones reaches boldly towards the skyline. The Tri-State Marker was
constructed in 1938 by the Youth Work Administration, one of the "alphabet soup"
public works agencies created by the Roosevelt Administration during The Great
Depression of the 1930's. Vandals have since removed some of the brass
plaques which were affixed to the stones. One generation builds; the next
tears down, and so it goes.
